Thus, is it better to stay away from red wine completely or do the benefits to the heart outweigh the risk to the digestive system and liver? The health benefit of red wine comes from tannin, a component that gives red wine its color (and why white wines aren't mentioned for the health benefit). You can easily get the benefit from pills made with concentrated tannin. It's cheaper and more effective. Basically, drink wine only because you like the taste, and whatever benefit comes from it is simply a bonus.
