Some good red wines for a new wine drinker?

I have always preferred white wine to red. However I am thinking that maybe most the red wines I have tried have been cheap and nasty at functions and the like.

Can anyone recommend some good red wines, say up to 拢10-15 a bottle that would be good for me to experience andn grow into.

Thanks!|||If it was me I love a Rioja (spanish region) it is oak aged so it usually has a wonderful oaky taste to it which I love. If you are just starting to try and get in to red wine try some Australian and New Zealand wines. I would also stick to medium bodied as well. I didn't appreciate full bodied wines when I first started drinking red wine so they could put you off.

If you can find a New Zealand pinot noir for around 拢10 it should be really nice.

I hope you find the red wine for you. Dont give up on the first bottle if you dont like it give as many different countries and grapes as you can a go. There is no going back once you find it :-)|||I would recommend that you look at a good Chateauneuf du Pape.

It is a lovey rich wine, full of taste and sure to impress.

here are a couple of links that may convince you. I love it but can only afford it on special occasions.

The more expensive doesn't guarantee a taste you like and if you are inexperienced in drinking red the perceptible difference in quality will be wasted on you...

I would get a bottle of the following varieties http://www.thewinedoctor.com/advisory/ta鈥?/a> and don't spend more than a fiver till you know which one you prefer.

The most I've ever spent is 拢20 and it wasn't anything remarkable ( I felt the same over blue mountain coffee so maybe I have a hugely unsophisticated palate.ppfffft )|||Wine is a matter of taste... I would suggest you try something akin to a table red to start with, a favourite of mine is montepulciano d'abruzzo, there's many varieties and it is quite reliable. You can pick up something like valpolicello in nearly any tesco - as with the other wine, there is always a few different bottles at different prices - never that expensive. I'm very taken by Italian wines myself, so hence the choices.

I have a relative who imports wines, and he would be the first to point out that the price of wine does not necessarily mean that it is that wonderful. That said, bear in mind that a certain amount of the price is government tax etc. So it would be wise to never go below 拢5 - or you will be drinking the job lot wine that you get at functions!|||I've tried some nice reds from Spain recently, from the Toro and Jumilla regions. Try something light like a french Beaujolis which can be chilled. But one of my favorites is Barolo which is italian and is a bit more expensive. You going to have to do some tasting to find out what suits you!
